Welcome to the homepage for service rifle shooting in New Zealand.
What is Service Rifle shooting?
Service rifle shooting consists of practical style matches, often with a military flavor. Stages can involve movement, rapid fire, reloads, multiple targets, precision and much more. Although there are 'core' matches, many stages are whatever the match director can dream up! With many members also belonging to pistol clubs, the cross culture is easy to see. At the same time, traditional style matches ( trinity, snap, application etc) are well catered for at national and club level. Ideal rifles to begin service rifle competition with are the various .303s, SKS carbines and SLR rifles. While we are primarily a rifle shooting organization, practical shotgun and pistol matches are often held along side rifle stages. Many clubs meet monthly for various shoots and some hold nationally recognized events such as the Anzac day .303 shoot that can attract up to 80 competitors. If you just want to have a go at club level with granddad's .303 , feel like hauling out that oddball rifle you bought years ago or fancy taking on some of the best shooters New Zealand , Australia and South Africa can field at nationals, service rifle shooting has something to offer.
Our MissionThe NZSRA was formed to develop and promote practical style matches throughout New Zealand. Our task is to provide support to affiliated clubs and members in the areas of match design, range officer training, match rules and suitable firearm types. We provide opportunities for national and international events and constantly strive to provide and build our sport. Service rifle shooting is constantly being developed and a distinctive New Zealand style is emerging. It is our goal to develop the sport and promote it across similar shooting disciplines. We act as an advocate for licensed shooters and provide a fun, competitive arena for historic, classic and exotic firearms that shooters once seldom saw on the range. Above all, NZSRA is dedicated to the safe, competitive use of military firearms in an enjoyable environment and seek to hold regular national and international events.
